Five-Day Advanced Training in
Collaborative Systemic Family Therapy

This 5 day intensive course combines developments in systemic family therapy with solution focused approaches to create a rich context for learning and expanding repertoires for thinking and practice.

The course is suitable for all those practitioners and therapists in health and social care services interested in widening their repertoire of possibilities for practice with children and families. The lively and skills based training schedule allows for case consultations, skills practice exercises, illustration of effective techniques and methods through videotaped presentations/ live consultations.

The presenters will illustrate how they work including:

  • How to create more collaborative and resource-based beginnings in work with families.
  • How to convene, engage, and create realistic expectations in family therapy.
  • How to work with so-called resistant clients to create possibilities for practice.
  • How to develop interviewing techniques to promote more creative and improvisational opportunities in family and individual sessions.
  • How to use aspects of the personal self of the practitioner or therapist in order to make more effective connections with clients.
  • How to engage with the resourcefulness within the client, family and therapist to create more effective directions for practice.
  • How to work with opposition, conflict and challenge without losing heart!
  • How to create bridges between warring adolescents and their parents
  • How to use models of consultation in teamwork and co-therapy.
  • How to think creatively about expanding our “use of self” in therapy beyond our personal "comfort zone” of practice repertoires.
  • How to create opportunities for change in complex cases where many organisations may be involved with the family.

The presenters will endeavour to create opportunities throughout the five-day intensive for exploration and discussion of participants' key areas of interest, challenge and professional development . This will ensure that we focus upon the uppermost areas of interest and concern brought by participants. The content may therefore be amended in response to dialogue and feedback from participants to ensure the creation and maintenance of an effective teaching and learning culture.
